The AllAfrica Foundation, in association with AllAfrica Global Media, is establishing the Charlayne Hunter-Gault Africa Journalism Fellowship. The program, which honors the pioneering work of veteran journalist Charlayne Hunter-Gault, will benefit African media practitioners and their organisations. Fellows will visit Europe or the United States for varying periods, generally ranging from one to six months, with customized itineraries that offer opportunities for research and reflection, consultations with media enterprises and peer interactions.

Developed in consultation with African journalists and with the African Women's Media Foundation, the program will address the expressed need of women, in particular, to gain more authority and autonomy in their newsrooms through access to 1) investigative research and technology skills; 2) an international network of support and encouragement from other media professionals; and 3) briefings and exposures focused on the critical, under-reported issues of health, food security, gender disparities, conflict prevention and resolution, and the environment.

Charlayne Hunter-Gault, whose prize-laden career has taken her to the New Yorker magazine, the New York Times, the NewsHour on PBS, National Public Radio, and CNN, has become a beloved mentor to a generation of aspiring journalists. Her connection with this Fellowship continues that legacy.
