Livelihood Health Centre in Atuazire, Mankon, Bamenda, at the weekend welcomed two Italy-based humanists who hailed the health services provided there.
The couple, Cameroonian-born Victor Abongwa and wife, Louisa Abongwa, told the press, the staff of Livelihood and some beneficiaries from their services that the initiative to open a health centre was a wonderful one.
Louisa said she was impressed by the health centre which she noted, was very clean compared to others she had seen elsewhere. She, however, regretted that it lacked many facilities.
On how she came to be acquainted with Livelihood NGO, she said she and her husband who were working on a similar programme came across it on the Internet.Abongwa, the man, said he had such a project in mind which was to help his brothers and sisters back home.
To realise this goal, he contacted Cameroonians abroad and foreign friends. After carrying out investigations on Livelihood NGO, he discovered that it was a credible and trustworthy organisation.
Since then, Abongwa said he and his friends had been working on a programme to send some two containers with provisions to the Livelihood Health Centre. His point of interest was hygiene, sanitary and health department.
"We are presently working on that programme in Europe," he said.As proof of his determination to promote Livelihood he donated FCFA 650,000.On her part, Louisa advised the authorities of the centre to use the money judiciously and make Livelihood a place for everybody.
The money was received with profound gratitude by Athanasius Monju, founder of Livelihood NGO, who gave an outline of the relationship between his organisation and the benefactors.
Monju said the health centre still needed a lot to be done - facilities like an ambulance and a generator because of frequent power cuts, laboratory equipment and mattresses, to name just a few.
Besides educating people on health aspects like handling drainage, hygiene and sanitation, handling of pregnant women, health care, etc, Monju said Livelihood Health Centre carries out free HIV tests and counselling.
Those found sero-positive are sent to treatment centres. On their return, the centre takes care of them.
