The dream of the biggest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to wrestle power from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the forth-coming December general elections would be a mirage, judging by the way party supporters continue to switch camp to the NPP, despite the problems the NPP has had with its primaries.

Tension, misunderstanding, accusations and defections have characterized the campaign activities of the NDC in some constituencies across the country.

The latest constituency to be hit by this phenomenon is the Lower Manya Constituency in the Eastern Region, where over 300 supporters of the party, including the constituency Chairman, Mr. Wisdom Tsatsu, have crossed carpet to join the NPP. Two NDC Assembly members, namely Hon. Evans Nash Noener and Hon Masud Mumim of the Kpong Parkston and Kpong Ahudjo electoral areas respectively have joined the bandwagon.

The defectors have accused the NDC Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Hon. Michael Teye Nyarwunu for been ineffective, inefficient and a leader who lacks ideas and vision to move the constituency forward.

They explained that Hon. Nyarwunu has become arrogant, disrespectful and exercised his authority over the constituents without any respect for them.

According to the Assembly members, they have tried to endure his attitude for quite a long time now, but it does not seem like the MP would change for the better.

They also accused the MP as somebody who works against the progress of the party, especially the flag bearer, Prof. Evans Atta Mills.

In buttressing their point, they gave instances where the MP had come out publicly to criticize the health condition of the flag bearer, and called for his (Prof. Mills) immediate removal.

However, they said what broke the camel's back was when the Hon MP poured invectives and insults on Hon. Noener, accusing him (Hon. Noener) of being a thief, at a mini rally held in the constituency last Sunday.

But The Chronicle investigation has revealed that their decision to defect to the NPP was not mainly because of the attitude of the MP, but the level of achievement of the NPP, as they heaped praises on the successes of the NPP administration in the short period of time that it has been in office.

They mentioned the introduction of the Capitation Grant, School Feeding Programme and National Health Insurance Scheme among other infrastructure developments, which the NPP has provided to Ghanaians as an achievement that every sound politician should be proud of. Further investigations conducted by The Chronicle in the area revealed that the MP has lost favour, sympathy and confidence of the electorate.

Some supporters of the party lamented that if the situation was not checked immediately, the once upon a time World Bank of the party would be lost to the NPP, in the up coming elections.

They have therefore called on the top executives of the party to intervene in order to bring peace and restore the lost confidence of the electorate in the constituency.
