Kampala — PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has ordered the Attorney General to verify war debt claims by thousands of people from Acholi region, amounting to sh1.44 trillion.
"The claims found to be genuine should be paid in not more than two financial years (2008/09) and (2009/2010)," he said.
The team to verify the claims should have officials from the ministries of defence, justice and representatives of the claimants or their lawyers."
The complainants, who filed a case in court, want the Government to pay them for 245,046 livestock eaten or looted during the war by soldiers and LRA rebels.
The President's letter of June 18 to Prof. Khiddu Makubuya, who is also the justice minister, also directed him to ensure that an out-of-court settlement of the case should be finalised in six months.
"In future, no other such claims should be entertained from this region," he said.
